WHITE MAGNOLIA|  SCULPTURE BY IVA VIANA

When Iva created the Magnolia, she was mesmerised with the beauty and scale of the petals of this pre-historic flower.
 Magnolia trees are very common in Portuguese gardens and were brought from Japan in the 16th century during "the age of discovery". The largest White Magnolia tree in Europe is located in Serra de Monchique and their flowers can bloom to the size of 25cm.
Magnolias symbolically represent nobility, perseverance and love for nature.
In Japan the magnolia is used as a medicinal and ornamental plant. The flower is called Hanakotoba in the Japanese system. This means sublime, natural, and shows love for nature.
Inspired by the traditional techniques of stucco moulding, Iva Viana develops and executes objects that arise both from the fascination with the heritage left by the Portuguese masters and the desire of reinterpreting it.  
Besides being a full time sculptor, Iva also competes internationally in rowing, passing much of her time in nature which she absolutely adores and draws inspiration.
